Fancy Free by Mia Monroe Fancy Free was… a book Fancy Free by Mia Monroe Fancy Free was… a book that I tried to love as much as Chasing Fate, but I just couldn’t. I’ll be honest, there were moments that I saw a real person behind Hayden, but it was few and far between. I enjoyed Luke as a character enough that I was able to forgive his ‘insta-love’ for Hayden. This was definitely a bisexual awakening story, so you have to expect a few tropes because you’re reading it -for- a trope. But Hayden just left me cold. He’s a wedding planner without a romantic bone in his body. He spends the entire book looking for reasons Luke isn’t gay enough for him because he ‘doesn’t do straight boys.’ I know that is a real thing, but Luke is the most direct and devoted guy from the moment he meets Hayden, and he’s eager for everyone to know it. Maybe that’s not too realistic, but this is the suspended belief that we are given. A straight guy finds the one man he’s attracted to and doesn’t have to answer to anyone about it and is proud that people know how much he adores Hayden. So…why does Hayden seem like a stick in the mud? A very pampered, spoilt…stick in the mud. It honestly feels like the more Luke gets to know Hayden, the less he should see that Hayden is for him. But yet, this pairing is forced through to the end, and everything magically works. Here’s my honest opinion on this book. It wasn’t ready to be written yet. Hayden was not prepared to be in a relationship. The book wasn’t bad. I don’t regret reading it, but it is my professional opinion that this book, this pairing…should have been put off for at least another book to give more time for the characters to develop in that world and for Hayden to grow into someone who was truly ready for the spotlight. That being said, this book is worth a read if only because Luke is worth the time, and if you think about it, this book clearly made me care enough to want more, so that’s something! Sid is a master gardener who struggles every day to keep his disability under control, but with a job like his and for a guy who loves the outdoors, it’s not hard to do too much. In the midst of all this is Dante, a man released from prison for good behavior to help Sid with anything he needs, but his old life is not so hard to escape. Despite his good intentions, Dante gets pulled in one more time if he wants to keep Sid safe. I enjoyed this book for multiple reasons. The steam level was to the roof, five stars but I also really appreciated was the way that Sid’s disability was handled. MS is a real thing and there are no real ties that indicate who gets MS and who doesn’t but it can be debilitating. This story gives us a realistic expression of Sid’s life and Dante’s fierce respect and love for this Master Gardner. But it turns out that Cooper’s barely keeping his head above water in nearly every facet of his life except for his frat’s charity projects. Spending all his life trying to make college work because his real dad was the college dean, it’s clear to Trace that Cooper just…doesn’t like school and prefers to work with his hands. Heart had it right in their 1985 hit song, but I think our protagonist, Sydney was born a bit too late to appreciate the message. He’s stuck in a rut trying to find his ‘bearded’ prince because guess what? He loves handsome hairy men, I mean…bearded princes. Whatever, the fact is that he struggles with his own expectations throughout this book, and it’s a cause very close to most of our hearts. We all have a type, right? The kind of guy that just gets our gears going. But we also have another type, don’t we? The kind of guy we ‘deserve’…I don’t mean that we’re top-shelf. I mean that we sometimes disregard guys and gals because we assume they are too good for us and wouldn’t be interested. Insecurity is not a stranger, I don’t care who you are. So no matter how ridiculous Syndey sometimes seems with his flimsy excuses for why Diego and he won’t work out, it’s real and each of us finds flimsy excuses to limit ourselves every day. If this sounds strange, don’t let it stop you. It is, but the characters are addictive. In this story, Lucas Blackwell is a clairvoyant who is tired of being able to see what his lovers are thinking. If you think it would be great to know what people close to you are thinking, you’re wrong. So it’s a surprise to find out that not only is August a sort of crime-fighting serial killer, but he’s also never NOT focused on Lucas when they are together. To be honest, I’m not really surprised that it takes a psychotic person to be so devoted. Often times romance novels are sort of wishful fairy tales. We read them and love them because we know that we’ll hardly ever get something so wonderful in real life. So this story and all of its fantastical tropes and cliches? Is in its own way more believable…Oof. Now, all that being said, I gave this book 5 stars because I enjoyed it from the moment I picked it up to the moment I put it down.
