Blackout curtains.

The thought snapped into place easily as if he had never been asleep to begin with. Sometimes he wondered whether he slept at all, but the gap in time suggested by his bedside clock said he must have. Sleep just wasn’t as satisfying as it was before he served. On some level he was always waiting for a shoe…or bomb…to drop.

He wasn’t sorry that he joined the army. Frankly, anything was worth getting out of his family home. He wasn’t so tough that he couldn’t admit that he missed his mom, but his Dad had been intolerable. It hardly made sense. He’d grown up looking up to his Dad so much and didn’t every man want a proud Alpha son? They’d celebrated when he presented Alpha. But then no sooner than the next day and his Dad had started snapping at him and even as Roman knew he should diffuse each situation, it was a struggle. What often came out his mouth, the words and the growls were often uncensored and confrontational.

It didn’t help that the two voices of reason in the house were his omega mother and his undecided little brother. Roman used to be close to them both, but after he presented, he noticed his father watched him constantly as if he were a wild beast in the house that couldn’t be trusted. The military was for the best. Roman had anticipated more clashes with his superiors and oddly found very few. Whatever issues he had with authority seemed to remain only inside of his household.

The clock said 6:29AM, so Roman stretched a hand over to turn it off. He always woke up just before it went off and felt cheated in every way. If he could remember the next time he was at the store, he’d buy some blackout curtains and hope to at least beat the harsh sun rays glinting through the window on his face- twinkling like ridiculously unwanted fairy lights across his eyelids.

It only took one more twinkle before he rolled out of bed and went for his running gear. He’d shower when he got back. Grey sweat pants, white t-shirt, and his black Nikes later had him staring in his bathroom mirror. Every time he thought about growing his hair back out, this reminded him that he would probably never. Even a year later, he still sported his buzzed cut hair.

Idly, he turned his head and rubbed at the light shadow of facial hair developing on his face. It was…Thursday? Yeah, fucking Thursday, which meant he’d have to shave before he worked at the bar the next night. Satisfied that he at least didn’t look offensive, he grabbed his wallet and keys before navigating his horde of unpacked boxes and heading out the front door. It wasn’t until he was a few blocks away that he realized he left his phone at home.

Ah well, he’d check it when he got back. It’s not like anyone would call anyway.

Voicemail. That was the most of what he’d heard of Roman in much too long, his voice telling to leave a voicemail whenever Raen tried to call. With a frustrated huff, he ended the call and looked out of the window of the bus he was currently on. Almost there. They had driven past Raen’s new university not five minutes ago and Roman lived nearby – the next stop was his.

When Raen got accepted into university, their dad had almost made him turn it down. After all there were plenty of schools in their city too, he had said. It had taken some time, patience and negotiations, but eventually he had agreed to let Raen leave home on one condition; he move in to live with his older brother. His older brother who never picks up the phone. Raen wasn’t sure if Roman remembered he was supposed to be arriving today. At this point he wasn’t sure if Roman even knew he was coming at all. Their mother had promised to take care of it, but Raen had a hard time believing his brother would have listened to the dozen voicemails she’d left him.

Waiting for the bus to stop and then struggling his way out of the door with the two large pieces of luggage he was traveling with, Raen pursed his lips in displease. Had he been born a beta, this wouldn’t be so difficult. His parents would have let him live in the student dormitory like everyone else. Though, it hadn’t exactly been a surprise for anyone when he presented as an omega. He was the perfect image of a younger version of their mother with his black hair and emerald green eyes, narrow facial features and petite frame. Sucking a full, red lower lip between his teeth anxiously, Raen glanced around. He’d never been known to have the best sense of direction.

Stopping just for a moment to gather his hair up on a messy bun on the top of his head to get the overgrown strands out of the way, Raen pulled out his phone again and typed in Roman’s address. It wouldn’t do any good to call him again when it would only be the voicemail answering again, so Raen would just have to find his own way there. Hopefully his brother had already woken up. It was still early, after all.

It only took him two wrong turns and initially walking into the wrong building to find the right apartment though. Raen was vaguely impressed by himself. As he stood there though, behind Roman’s door, there was a moment of hesitation as his fingers hovered over the doorbell; he was nervous. His heart fluttered in his chest in a way he wouldn’t say was pleasant at all, his hand shook just the slightest bit, his stomach was filled with butterflies. He hadn’t seen Roman in a long time, it was only natural he would be a little nervous. In fact, it had been long before he presented when they last met in person. They used to be close, when Roman still lived at home. Then he’d gone off to army and Raen barely ever heard from him again.

His fingers finally pressed the doorbell, listening to the overexcited, shrill chime it gave. Raen stepped back a few steps, shuffling in his place from one foot to the other, his brilliant green eyes drawn to the hallway floor like the small grains of sand on it from outside were something truly exquisite. Raen was often an over-thinker. Which, more often than not, resulted in him thinking of the very worst case scenarios and psyching himself out.

Right now the only thing on his mind, though, was one thought that made him truly nervous over everything else. What if Roman didn’t answer his calls because he didn’t want Raen here?

On his way back up the stairs to his apartment, Roman couldn’t help but smile. While waking up was hell, his morning run always did wonders for his mood. It got his blood pumping in all the right ways. That smile only widened when he saw the lithe body standing in front of his door. A discreet sniff as he approached slowed him down as he recognized a sweet layer of omega beneath a myriad of other smells.

Idly, he wondered if they were at the wrong door. “Can I help you?” Though he felt somewhat lecherous, he couldn’t help the way his voice deepened and turned coy as he spoke.

It wasn’t until the young man turned around that Roman froze. He’d been alright for a moment, so caught up watching his sinful lips move. But as soon as Roman let his gaze take in the visitor in his entirety, he sucked in another breath and recognized two things at once. One, that one of the smells layered under his own natural sweetness was what his inner beast recognized as home, and two, that Raen was the spitting image of their mother and he should have known that jet black hair anywhere since it matched his own.

“Oh my god. What are you doing here?” Roman fumbled a bit, his face flashing between panic, pleasure and embarrassment for how close he’d come to hitting on his only sibling. Then he realized how that sounded. “I don’t mean you aren’t welcome. I’m sorry. Let me get the door open. Did you carry all this up yourself? …not that you can’t, I just would have helped if I had known you were coming.” While essentially verbally vomiting anything that came to his mind, Roman searched and then found his keys. As soon as he got the door unlocked, he threw the door open and winced when it hit some boxes still in the entryway. “Yeah…I’ve got some work to do still.”

Raen only started to worry more when there was no answer at the door. He rang the bell again, and a third time just for good measure – in case Roman hadn’t heard the first two times. He fiddled with the sleeves of his shirt nervously, wondering if Roman had forgotten he was coming. Maybe he wasn’t at home. Raen could always find a nice place nearby to sit down and eat breakfast and come back later.

He could hear someone walking up the stairs behind him, but didn’t pay much attention to it before a deep voice addressed him. Turning around with a small startle, a bright smile stretched over his lips after his brain took a moment to recognize it indeed was his older brother. “Roman! Hey”, he tucked a strand of black hair that had fallen over his eyes behind his ear and gave a relieved laugh, the anxious knot in his stomach loosening, “Sorry coming so early, I was worried I might wake you up.”

The moment Roman spoke though, Raen’s smile lost some of its brightness. Not because he was angry at Roman, but because he realized immediately what was going on and now he felt like he was imposing. “You didn’t get mom’s voicemails, did you?”, he sighed, giving Roman a slightly reprimanding look, “You do know you have a phone so people can get a hold of you, right?”

He worried his lip between his teeth for a while, letting Roman open the door for them before cutting into his rambling, “I’m starting university here in a few weeks. And well… I need a place to stay. Dad won’t let me live in the dorms, so mom promised she’d ask you if I can come live with you. Please tell me you talked about this with her at least once?” He’d just assumed Roman hadn’t remembered – or known – it was today Raen was supposed to come, but this would be outright humiliating if he’d just shown up outside Roman’s door without the older man knowing he was coming at all.

Stepping inside, Raen raised an eyebrow and looked around. Bare walls, boxes, not much but the bare necessities. It looked like Roman had only just moved, not lived here for quite a while already. Green eyes then flickered back to Roman hesitantly and Raen’s fingers idly rubbed against the skin of his own wrist as he said, “I, uh… I can figure something else out if you don’t want me intruding here. I’m sure I can find another omega I can be roommates with or something and dad will eventually warm up to the idea.”

As soon Raen entered his apartment, Roman started moving boxes out of the way to clear a rolling path to his bedroom. His spare room was barely the size of a closet and it was full of junk that Roman could clear another day. As Raen’s scent changed, Roman became aware of his distress and tried to fix it without calling attention to it.

“I’ve been busy, I guess it slipped my mind.” Roman hated lying but he couldn’t help preferring that Raen thought he was absent minded than thinking he was cold enough not to listen to their mother’s voicemails. Frankly, listening to her voice just made him miss home and all the creature comforts that he hadn’t had in a long time anyway.

Standing outside of his bedroom, Roman glanced back at Raen and frowned at the insecurity in his voice. “There’s no way that you’re going to go stay with people you don’t know. Omega or not. Please stay and save me the trouble of camping outside of a dorm room like a hobo.” Then he took a deep breath and opened his bedroom door, pulling Raen’s suitcases behind him. He immediately started stripping the bed and grabbing his dirty laundry off the floor. “I’m sorry about the smell. It’ll get better once I get this stuff out and you open the window. I’ll take the couch until I get the side room cleaned out. Don’t argue about it because I won’t be able to sleep if you’re not comfortable.”

With that, he shuffled out with an armload of bedding and laundry and returned barely two minutes later with a new set of sheets and a blanket, which he sat on the bed. Roman stopped, took a deep shuddering breath and immediately felt guilty. He wasn’t really sure how to handle himself. Omegas were rare in the military and the rare ones they let in were on such hardcore suppressants that you’d think they were all betas. He wasn’t stupid. He knew it was biological to want to take care of Raen. But this was new and strange. For God’s sake, he felt like whining that he’d cleared out his clothes, mourning his smell leaving the room like a sad puppy. And Raen smelt…amazing. It wasn’t uncontrollable, but sweet and tasty enough that it was like baking cookies. He just wanted to keep breathing in and possibly rubbing himself all over him like a favorite toy. That…wouldn’t go over well.

Roman needed to get a grip. “So get comfortable. Don’t touch my guns, but everything else you have free reign over. I need to shower or you’ll never get my stink out.”

Walking further into the apartment only made it clearer Roman hadn’t bothered to unpack yet. Aside from the boxes lying around though, Raen could see it was a nice apartment, one with potential. With only a little bit of decorating and creating a matching color scheme, it could be made into a cozy home. Glancing around, he decided some of the walls were in need of repainting as well. Maybe, if Roman let him, the apartment could become his next personal project.

His discomfort eased and the tenseness in his shoulders melted away when Roman insisted he stay. With a relieved chuckle, he nodded, “Thanks. Though you might want to call mom to let her know you’re alive. She worries about you.” He didn’t want to sound like he was nagging the first thing when he saw Roman after so long, but it wasn’t a lie that their mother often worried about how her eldest child was doing since she didn’t hear from Roman that often.

Stepping into the bedroom brought on a very concentrated scent of… alpha. Raen tried to mask his sharp inhale with clearing his throat and giving Roman a smile when the man hastily gathered his clothes and sheets. He hoped Roman wouldn’t notice the smile was the slightest bit strained. Raen would have protested to taking over his brother’s room if he wasn’t trying to get a grip still, a pleasant shiver slithering down his spine. Alphas weren’t the only ones affected by the scent of an omega, it worked the other way around as well. Their father never allowed Raen to be alone with alphas anywhere; he hadn’t even had a boyfriend before, because he feared if he brought someone home their dad would go into a murderous rampage. Given he was only allowed to interact with alphas in public where their scents mixed and mingled with so many other scents, Raen hadn’t been prepared for the mind-clouding effect it would have on him.

“It’s- It’s fine”, he said, and maybe his words were a little breathier than they needed to be. It certainly wasn’t helping he was going into heat this month; Raen had noticed his sense of smell only became sharper the closer he got to his heats. He’d have to talk to Roman about that, he noted to himself, awkward as it may be. He’d have to look for a hotel to hole up in for the duration of it. “But we’ll have to talk about this sleeping arrangement, because making you sleep on the couch will make me feel bad”, he pouted at Roman. Raen couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed as the sheets and clothes were carried away. He knew he shouldn’t care, shouldn’t even think about it, but Roman’s scent was… nice. It was much nicer than it should’ve been. Not overwhelming, like some alphas had a scent that made Raen want to wrinkle his nose, but just… natural and a little earthy. Good.

Raen nodded absent-mindedly when Roman said he needed a shower and went to make the bed in the meantime. With the fresh sheets on the bed and the window cracked open just a little, Raen wandered to see the rest of the apartment. He ended up in the kitchen, wondering if Roman would mind him making breakfast for them. Raen hadn’t eaten yet and his stomach was starting to make its need for food clear.

Eventually he decided it probably wouldn’t be taken badly and peeked into the cupboards and the fridge to see what he had to work with. Pulling out a pan, Raen settled for making two omelettes – mostly because there wasn’t much else Roman had ingredients for. Getting started on them, he also made a fresh pot of coffee. “I hope you don’t mind me using your kitchen”, he quipped over his shoulder at Roman, though not quite sure if the man would hear him.

He might have been already in the shower with the water cascading over his back and his forehead resting against the shower wall, but Roman both heard and acknowledged Raen’s call about the kitchen. The apartment wasn’t so big that sound didn’t carry, even if Roman had sensitive ears. “What’s mine is yours.” He called.

Meanwhile, Roman stared down at his traitorous cock and sighed before turning the water to cold. He’d have to figure out how to find time to take care of that either when Raen was gone to class or before he woke up each morning. Last thing he needed was to be seen as a pervert by his own brother. He finished up his shower and ruffled the towel through his hair a few times before tucking it around his waist and pulling out his shaving kit. He purposely tried not to overthink why he was bothering to groom himself. He would normally do it Friday night before work, but hell, he did look a bit rough.

Once he was clean-shaven, he wandered out of the bathroom and back to his bedroom to grab some boxers. His mouth started watering on his way back to the kitchen and instinct led him over to the stove where he wrapped his arms around Raen from behind and squeezed. It was the first clear sign of affection that he’d given since his brother arrived and he was careful not to press his lower body against him, but he couldn’t really help this wash of happiness to see Raen cooking for him. “I’m glad you’re here. I’ve been so hungry all this time. Practically wasting away without a good meal in a sad apartment filled with boxes instead of love!” In mid-speech, he started laughing and let Raen go good-naturedly.

Humming as he cooked, Raen purposefully ignored the fact that Roman’s scent had caused such a strong reaction in him. If he didn’t think about it, maybe it’d go away – besides, it was because he hadn’t been expecting it and his heat was coming soon. There wasn’t anything to think about anyway. With a decisive nod, he folded the first omelette and set it on a plate at the table, starting on the second one.

Raen glanced over his shoulder when Roman walked into the kitchen, giving a tiny surprised sound at the strong arms wrapping around him and then laughed softly. He pressed against Roman’s chest and basked in the comforting embrace; he’d missed Roman. They used to be so close before Roman presented, after which they barely ever saw each other. Raen couldn’t remember the last time they’d spent time together, or even talked on the phone. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t looking forward to living here, because he was and it would give them an opportunity to connect again.

“Aw, poor you”, he laughed, shaking his head in amusement, “A good thing I came here to feed you then.” Turning around and pointing at Roman with the spatula he had in his hand, Raen raised an eyebrow, “Speaking of boxes. You have to do something about those! I’ll help you unpack if you want – this apartment would look so nice with a bit of decorating.” He folded the other omelette and set it on another plate, placing it on the table as well and taking out two cups for coffee. “It’s ready, come eat before it gets cold”, he announced, sitting down with his own full cup and taking a bite of the omelette in front of him, “You also need to upgrade your variety of spices, by the way.”

For a moment, Raen silently appreciated the food. He’d been too excited in the morning to eat anything before he left, so now his stomach was protesting being ignored for too long. Looking up at Roman with a grin, he said, “So, I have a week before orientation week starts and two weeks before classes start. Please tell me there’s something fun we can do together while I’m still free.”

Roman slid into the seat across from Raen and stabbed his fork into the omlette. If he had a tail, it would be wagging with the happiness still just eminating from him. He found himself with his eyes closed and teasing his brother with an exaggerated moan. “Oh baby brother, I’m going to love having you here. I’ll have to unpack all of these boxes just to keep from getting fat. Please, please…feed me anytime.”

Done with his theatrics, Roman smirks and leans forward to ruffle Raen’s hair just a little. “There’s tons to do. I work a few different jobs, but we can go out around them. I work Dante’s tomorrow, its a bar. I can take you, but…” Roman trailed off as he realized he actually had a fair amount of stipulations before his beast would let Raen go. This wasn’t likely to go over well. “I’ll need to scent you a bit. I know you’re not…like…mine or anything weird. Just…you’re kind of my responsibility and I don’t know how I’d…” Roman stopped and sighed.

“You understand what I’m saying, right? I know its sexist, but I can’t handle it if you smelled like anyone else and its already a bit stressful being in a place with so much going on. We could avoid it, but its actually a great place and I’d like to introduce you to a few friends.”

Raen’s cheeks flushed with an embarrassed red at the overexaggerated moan that came from Roman. There was a swell of happiness in his chest that the other clearly appreciated his company and an amused snort pushed through the bit of embarrassment he felt. “Yeah, yeah, just shut up and eat”, he shook his head and bit back a smile when he looked down at his own food. This was going to be nice, he thought happily.

He gave an undignified squeak at the hand in his hair, swatting it away with a pout on his lips. “Hey!”, he protested, patting down the already messy bun sitting on top of his head in an effort to minimize any damage done, not able to hide the little hint of a smile as he said, “I’ll have you know it takes time to get long hair to look even remotely okay and you’re messing it up.” Not that he had spent much time on it in the first place nor did he claim the bun had been a good one to begin with. When Roman mentioned a bar, though, Raen blinked at him and nodded. He was more of a stay-at-home-and-watch-Netflix-on-a-Friday-night kind of person, so he had never been to a bar before even when some of his friends in high school got their fake IDs.

Raen would have been immensely amused by Roman being so uncomfortable, had he not been slightly embarrassed at the thought of being scented by him. He did understand why Roman wanted to do it and he agreed it would probably be easier for him too – after all, Raen wasn’t known to be comfortable around so many strangers at once. Not to mention he didn’t want random alphas talking to him just because he smelt like an unmated omega. Roman’s scent on him would at least let them know he was there with someone. It was just the thought of being scented by someone who wasn’t his parents for the first time that had him slightly nervous. Even his parents hadn’t scented him since… well, at least in a few years anymore.

“Sure, I mean, it’s probably better that way, right?”, he said eventually, “I don’t mind. And I want to meet your friends.” He took a sip of his coffee, wincing as it burned on his tongue for a brief moment before he swallowed it and then said asked, “What time does your shift start?”

Roman couldn’t help feeling relieved when Raen agreed to the scenting. Though if he hadn’t, he would have found a way to avoid it. Even if he had to bring his friends to his apartment instead, which come to think of it, he might do after they both had a chance to unpack. As it was, he’d never invited anyone over because he didn’t want them to see how he’d failed to dig into his own and make it his.

There was actually several reasons that he’d failed to unpack and none of them were ones that he wanted to discuss with his friends. One solid one is that one of the more well-meaning betas, Mike, had been trying to introduce him to an unmated omega girl that was friends with his sister, and contrary to popular belief, being omega was not immediately an irresistible lure to an unmated Alpha. Roman was known for being particular about his partners and that is what made him an excellent bartender. It didn’t matter how drunk or how slutty the customers got, Roman wasn’t interested regardless of their primary or secondary gender.

One could argue that he didn’t have a sex drive, but that would be blatantly false. He’d had partners. More while he was in the military, but even then his control had been solid and he’d been requested more often than not as a service Alpha. One who can be relied on to get the job done without any complications. Technically, that might have been part of what made Roman so unresponsive to the average omega population. How romantic is the thought that any Alpha would do in a pinch?

Roman shook his head and grabbed Raen’s hands gently, pulling them away from his hair before he sent to straightening the long strands with his fingertips. “Let me.” Again, he felt a small sense of peace and gratefulness that Raen was there. “I don’t work tonight. I work tomorrow at eight in the evening. I work the busier nights for the tips and I’m not bad at calming the crowds when the bouncers are busy at the door. It’s just for a few hours.”

With Roman’s gentle fingers in his hair, Raen let out an involuntary satisfied purring noise in the back of his throat. He enjoyed having his hair played with, though it was a rare occasion when anyone did so. With a hint of red to his cheeks, he smiled at Roman and nodded, “So, at eight. Are you sure they’re going to let me in?” He raised an eyebrow at the question. It’d be a shame if they didn’t, Raen was looking forward to seeing Roman’s workplace and friends.

He didn’t, of course, expect Roman to let him drink, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to try to sneak a drink or two past him. “So, you’re going to introduce me to your friends, but what I’m really curious about is if you have a girlfriend?”, he asked with a slightly teasing smile, “Or boyfriend, whatever.” Raen had never heard Roman say he was dating someone, even though their mother often asked him about it when they talked on the phone. Of course it could be that Roman simply didn’t want to tell them or perhaps he was more interested in friends-with-benefits or one-night stand sort of arrangements, Raen wouldn’t know. But he was intrigued. Someone like Roman should’ve had plenty of omegas trying to appeal to him, so it wasn’t like his brother didn’t have opportunities to meet unmated omegas who were interested.

“Mom and dad’s been wondering if you’ll get mated soon”, he said with a small shrug, starting to do the dishes while he spoke, “They don’t think you’d tell them even if you had found someone who could be your mate before you’re already mated.” Raen glanced over his shoulder at Roman, before returning to his task at hand. Their parents were… traditional, in most things. They had made it abundantly clear they wanted to meet anyone who Raen considered a ‘prospective mate’ and give their blessing before anything happened. Raen had always been an easy child to raise, having listened to his parents on almost everything, but this was something he was considering skipping. Of course he would introduce his future mate to his parents after they had been dating for some time already, but he wasn’t looking forward to their dad openly judging someone he had just met.

“Anyway”, he suddenly changed the subject, grinning at Roman and putting away the last of the dishes, “How about we start with unpacking now? I’m a bit excited really, I mean, I was thinking we could unpack your things and maybe make the apartment a little more… I don’t know, home-y? Cozy. A few plants in the living room and something nice on the walls. If you want to, of course!” He didn’t want to seem like he’d just walked in here and was already trying to change everything in Roman’s own home. But he’d thought Roman too would appreciate some color and coziness in this apartment.

Roman hummed in thought as he withdrew his hands. Raen’s question cut a bit too close to home and Roman wasn’t even sure how to answer. He’d try for honesty, but the honest truth was that he wasn’t sure exactly what the problem was himself.

“Nah. I don’t really date much.” He hedged at first, but then let it go. “I had the chance in service, but it just never felt right. Nobody seems to smell right…you know? I don’t think Dad would understand. Dad’s pretty black and white. Omega in heat equals rut and mating. I don’t. Can’t, I don’t’ think.”

Roman brings a hand up and rubs the crease between his eyes. “That was a bit too much information, wasn’t it? Sorry.”

Grateful for the subject change, Roman smiled and pushed off of where he was leaning against the kitchen counter. “Let’s start in the living room, then. Do you like books? I have a lot of them boxed up still. I have a vinyl record player too somewhere. I feel kind of bad for just neglecting all of it, but…” Roman trailed off when he realized he was about to out how empty and lonely he’d been. What a way to ruin what few cool points he had with his brother. “I don’t even know what kind of music you like.”

Raen nodded in understanding, though a little surprised at Roman’s words. He had to agree though, their father really was black and white and wasn’t always the best person to go to for advice. He wasn’t a bad person, not at all, but he was… conservative, for the lack of a better word.

He chuckled good-heartedly at Roman’s apology, shaking his head, “Don’t apologize. I’m not a kid, you know, hearing someone talk about sex isn’t going to traumatize me or something.” He did understand what Roman was saying about not having really found anyone who felt right. Raen knew several alphas whose scents were nice enough, pleasant even, but… not anything that’d make him really want them. He’d always spent his heats alone so far – not that their parents would have it any other way – because no matter how needy he could get, he knew it wouldn’t be satisfying in the end if he took someone to his bed he didn’t have a real connection with.

Nodding enthusiastically, Raen followed Roman into the living room. “Oh, I listen to anything that gives me inspiration”, he grinned, “I’m not sure if I told you yet, but I’m a dance major in university.” He remembered when they were kids and Roman would occasionally take him to his dance practice when their parents were too busy. He’d never thought it’d be something he’d want to do for a living.

“Just tell me where you want everything”, he said, opening one of the boxes with books in it, “The bookshelf would look nice if we left one of the shelves for decoration, like any pictures or other items you would want to put on display?”

Roman grinned and grabbed a few more boxes that he knew would be filled with decorative things and sat them near. “I’m glad you’re still dancing. I liked watching you dance.” Roman resisted the urge to comb his fingers through Raen’s hair again, imagined gripping it and tilting his head back just enough that Roman could rub his nose up against the soft flesh of his neck. Once he realized what he was thinking, Roman instead focused on his own box and shelf. His heart clenched and the same feeling of failure crept up his spine. “Yeah…um, I’m not great at decorating. I need just a minute…I’ll be back. Do what you think looks good.”

He turned abruptly and managed not to stumble until he was outside of his apartment and rushing down the stairs. The cold bit into his skin as he’d left his jacket and phone inside the apartment. He didn’t go far, simply around the corner and down a side alley before he leaned over with his head between his knees. He’d wanted to touch.

His father had been right to treat him like a lecher. Fucking hell. Man has his pick of omegas and he wants his little brother. Roman had felt so deeply insulted when he’d presented and his father had spurned him. They’d stopped allowing him to spend time with Raen without supervision. Hell, for a week or two Roman had worried that he was somehow going to burst out of his skin and turn into some kind of rage monster but it never happened. He was just watched so very carefully for every innocent thing. In one swoop, he’d lost both the soft hugs from his mother and brother and life at home had felt like a crime waiting to be committed. Now he knew why. It didn’t make sense. He knew plenty of siblings that had presented differently with no problem. Was it him? Could his Dad tell something wasn’t right? Did his Mom know?

Roman took a deep breath. Calm down. He closed his eyes and focused on just breathing even as his mind kept trying to work the puzzle. This had never happened before. His Dad, while eerie with his world knowledge, was not a fortune teller. There was no way he could have known. He was just protective. Maybe it had just been too long since Roman had sex. The idea of flirting with anyone made a fresh wave of disgust roll through him, but it was probably just anxiety. Right? You just need to get out there and get it out of your system.

When the lights of the city had stopped blurring and dancing in his eyes, Roman wiped a hand over his face and pushed off of the wall he was leaning against. It was time to go back. Raen would be worried if he stayed away too long.

Raen preened the slightest bit at Roman saying he’d liked watching him dance before – and that had been when they were kids and he hadn’t been very good yet. “You should come see me again sometime”, he suggested almost timidly, “I’m sure we’ll have many performances coming up at the college. I’ll bet it’d be more enjoyable to watch now that I actually know what I’m doing.” He chuckled lightly, starting to put the books onto the shelf. Raen looked up from the box when Roman made a hasty retreat though and soon enough he heard the front door opening and closing.

With a frown, he straightened from his crouching position and peeked around the corner at the door. Roman had left all his things inside. Worry started to settle into his chest; had he done something wrong? He would’ve called Roman to ask if everything was alright, had the man taken his phone. Biting his bottom lip, Raen hesitantly went back to the box he’d been unpacking before Roman’s sudden fleeing.

Raen finished putting the books into the bookshelf and pulled the box closer that Roman had pointed out as the one with some decorative items in it. He selected the ones that looked best, arranging them on one of the shelves, not wanting it to look too crowded, but there were enough items to be noticed. In the middle he left a space just big enough for a photo, maybe. At least Raen hoped Roman would want to put a picture of their family – or at least the two of them – on display there. Then again, they weren’t that close anymore, were they? He didn’t want to assume anything before they’d had time to grow closer to each other again. Raen wanted things to go back to how they’d been.

It had been a while since Roman left already when Raen finished with the bookshelf. He stepped further away to inspect his handiwork and smiled with a small, satisfied nod. It looked nice. Though it was only one piece of the puzzle, at least it was a start. Raen turned around then, glancing at the clock. Roman had been gone for quite a while already and he was getting worried. After all, the way he’d practically ran out suggested maybe not everything was all fine with him. Should Raen go out to look for him?

Shaking his head, Raen decided that was a bad idea. Roman was more than capable of looking after himself, but what worried Raen the most was trying to come up with something to explain his sudden escape from the apartment. Was it because of something Raen had done or said? He didn’t want to cause Roman any distress by being here. Of course Roman wouldn’t ever admit it even if it was Raen’s fault, because he was always amazing like that. With a defeated sigh, Raen stepped into the kitchen and made them hot chocolate. Roman would come back soon, Raen just knew it, and hot chocolate and cuddles always made them feel better when they were kids. Though they weren’t kids anymore, who was to say it wouldn’t still make things better?

He kept the cocoa warm while he waited for Roman, making them a comfortable little space on the couch with pillows to cuddle in for when Roman did come back and the moment he heard the door open again, Raen poured the cocoa into two mugs, taking it to the couch. “Roman? Is everything okay?”, he walked to the door to see Roman, waiting for him to get his shoes off before tugging him along back to the living room, “Come on, I made us cocoa.”

Roman let himself be dragged into the living room, grateful that Raen wasn’t demanding an explanation. If he’d bothered to take his phone with him, he could have come up with any manner of lies, but he hadn’t. Suffice to say that Roman was a horrible liar anyway.

Roman accepted the hot cocoa, careful not to touch Raen any more than necessary but also trying not to be obvious. Fuck if everything was going to feel awkward now if he let this get to him. Suddenly Roman wondered if hiding his problem in plain sight would be easier. The logic was shit, but it wasn’t impossible.

He sat and pulled a blanket off the back of the couch to pull over them both before the awkwardness just tumbled out of his mouth, “Its uh….been a while since I’ve been around an omega. I’ve never had one in my home. I just…had some…weirdness for a bit there. Sorry.” Roman forced a smile and gave Raen a light nudge with his shoulder. “It’s probably why most Alphas don’t stay single long, right? I’m probably fucking with biology at this point.”

Roman sunk down on the couch until he could rest his head on the back. “I really am glad you’re here. I’ll go out and take care of my issues and you and I can catch up on all the brother stuff we missed out on. …nice job on the shelves, by the way. We’ll have to call Mom for some pictures or take some new ones to fill it. I didn’t leave the house with anything so all I’ve got are shots of me and my unit buddies.”

Raen didn’t want to pry if Roman didn’t want to tell him what was going on. He wondered what had happened, but decided it would be best to let him tell on his own if he wanted to talk about it. He was glad Roman didn’t seem to be avoiding him, however.

“Here”, he offered the mug to Roman and sat down next to him on the couch with his own. Raen pulled his feet up and turned to look at Roman when the other finally spoke, the explanation tumbling out of him like he wasn’t really sure of what he wanted to say. Raen blinked at him in confusion once, then twice and let out an understanding sound. His cheeks might have turned the slightest bit red when his brain caught up with the meaning of Roman’s words.

“It’s fine”, he finally said with a small smile of his own that said he understood, “I guess it’s bound to be a little weird at first, huh? Dad wouldn’t let me be alone with an alpha for more than five minutes before – not even you, and I hadn’t presented yet at the time. We both just need some time to get used to it, right?” Silently Raen hoped him being an omega wouldn’t be a bigger problem in the future – he really wished things would go to normal once they were both used to each other’s presence. He felt a little bad for being the reason for Roman’s little freak out, wondering if he should’ve used some scent blockers or suppressants or something before coming. It hadn’t even crossed his mind.

Raen carefully leaned against Roman and grinned at the compliment. “We can take one right now”, he said excitedly and reached for his phone, “And then we can update it next year today as the one year anniversary of my moving in.” He pulled Roman closer and opened the camera, smiling widely as he snapped a test photo. Adjusting the angle a little, he grinned and pecked Roman on the cheek quickly, taking another picture at the same time.

“Oh! That one’s nice”, Raen seemed more than satisfied, showing the picture to Roman, “We could put that one on the shelf?”

To say that Roman was surprised by the kiss was an understatement. He had to admit the picture was good. Raen was so excited with the picture and playing with various filters on his camera that Roman took a moment to just…watch. The icy clench in his chest released slowly and grew warm instead. One moment Raen was looking down at his phone and the next, Roman slowly tilted his head and pressed his nose gently behind Raen’s ear and just held there. He knew it was not exactly something that brothers did, but it wasn’t sexual and it satisfied his beast. It was close to scenting. So, so very close but again, he hoped Raen would allow it. He’d have settled for a hug, but frankly he was terrified that he would pop an awkward boner and that was a lot harder to cover than this.

“Thank you, Raen.” He whispered before he returned to his own space. “Do you like movies? If so, what kind?”

Raen didn’t expect the sudden contact with Roman, his nose burying itself to one of the places where Raen’s scent was the most prominent. He didn’t protest though, simply tilting his head a little and letting the surprised tension that had gathered in his shoulders leave him, relaxing against Roman’s side again. It was an intimate gesture that brothers usually wouldn’t do with each other, but Raen couldn’t bring himself to care at that moment. It felt nice. A satisfied sound, almost like a purr, formed in the back of his throat and Raen smiled, “What are you thanking me for?”

He was the slightest bit surprised by noticing there was a distinct feeling of anticipation in the pit of his stomach at the thought of tomorrow; they’d agreed on Roman scenting him before they went to the bar Roman worked at. It was somewhat concerning that his omega side was enjoying attention from Roman so much, but Raen stalked it up to the fact he’d never had the chance to be around alphas like this. It would fade with time.

“Of course I like them”, he grinned at Roman’s question, “Hm, I prefer fantasy and action. I also like horror, but I don’t want to watch it alone.” Raen gave a sheepish chuckle at the confession.

Roman smiled and chanced a glance at Raen before he reached to the coffee table and pulled out a drawer that held a variety of takeout menus. “For being you. Now. You choose what you might want for dinner. I’ll pick a movie. We have a lot of catching up to do and I’ll admit that I hate watching movies alone, too. There’s quite a few of these I haven’t watched. I kind of subscribed to this movie thing and they just kept sending them.”

Roman handed over the menus and then went to pick a movie. He ended up choosing the latest Halloween movie because Jamie Lee Curtis would always be amazing and it was a safe bet. Then he stood to go get his phone off of the kitchen counter before returning to the couch. He kept the movie on pause until they had a change to order and have the food delivered.

While they waited, Roman picked up his hot cocoa and took another drink. Curiosity won out over propriety and he’d already broke the ice in terms of weird conversation, so he went ahead and asked. “So, you haven’t had a boyfriend? You’ve had to have had a few heats already. Do you…um….just deal with it or did Dad let you get a service Alpha?”

Roman winced at the thought. “Good grief that had to have been awkward. Dad and I had it rough, but at least I didn’t have to rely on his advice for that. I imagine Mom helped, but even that is…Jesus.”

Raen gave a shy laugh, shaking his head a little. This was nice, just spending time with Roman. He took the menus from the other and looked through them quickly, trying to decide what he wanted to eat. While Roman was choosing the movie, Raen settled for a chinese take-out menu. “Is this fine? I’m feeling like chinese today”, he asked when Roman came back with a movie. He inspected the movie Roman had chosen and gave an approving nod, “I do watch movies alone, just not the scary ones.”

When Roman brought up the topic of boyfriends and heats, Raen almost choked on his cocoa. He covered his mouth with one hand and gave a flustered laugh, not having expected him to start that conversation, at least just yet. Shaking his hand, Raen said, “You know dad, he wouldn’t let an Alpha come within a hundred feet of me when I’m in heat. He probably wants me to stay a virgin until I’m married. Though I’m not sure he’d let me marry anyone if it were up to him… he’s just too overprotective.”

Taking another careful sip, Raen hummed softly and shrugged, “I mean, mom did help a lot. Actually dad let her deal with most things when it came down to heats and other ‘omega things’ as he put it. She, uh, she did get me a few… toys to make the heat a little more bearable. That was awkward.” Raen ducked his head a little and hid behind his mug. He couldn’t believe he was actually talking about this with his older brother. “Speaking of which”, he mumbled, “I have a heat coming up at the beginning of next month. I think it’d make things easier for both of us if I booked a hotel room for those four days, right?” Since they were already talking about the subject, now was as good a time as any to tell Roman about it.

“Chinese is great. As long as you buy some gyoza, I’m happy.” Roman pulled out his wallet and handed Raen his card. “I think they’ll let you order online. Order anything you want, I live on leftovers.”

When Raen mentioned their Dad, Roman scoffed. “I guess I shouldn’t have taken it personally then, I just felt like he was declaring me a lecher and I’d just presented. I kind of doubted all of my interactions with you for a while like I’d done something wrong. I know better now, but…it was a thing.”

Roman leaned back against the couch again and contemplated the rest of what he’d said. “Well, you’re an adult now and not living in Dad’s house so you should know that there are service Alphas that you can request. I did that for a bit while I was in service. It’s not romantic, but it’s safer than going to a bar and trying to pull.”

Even after he suggests it, Roman hates himself for the jealous curl at the thought of anyone near Raen during his heat. “But don’t…if you’re saving yourself. That’s…nice. You’ll make an Alpha so happy to be your first.” Then to gloss over that awkwardness, he adds, “I’d feel better if you stayed here and I got the hotel room. We could stock up food and drink for you and you wouldn’t have to worry about being in a strange place.”

Raen frowned softly when Roman confessed he’d thought there was something wrong with him because of how their dad had treated him. Brows drawn together and lips pursed, he shook his head, “Dad can be so insensitive sometimes.” He didn’t really know what else to say. It had been several years already since all of that had happened and Raen had been still young enough to not really fully grasp what was going on. He remembered being confused when their parents had suddenly stopped letting the two of them spend time alone.

Green eyes flickered over to Roman as he explained he’d been a service alpha for some time and Raen couldn’t help but wonder briefly how many omegas he’d had sex with before. Sighing, he then said, “I don’t think I could do that… I mean, you know, there’s no meaning behind it, so I’d just feel awful afterwards.”

Taking another sip and nestling further into the sofa, Raen raised an eyebrow at Roman and gave a small scoff. “I’m not going to kick you out of your own apartment”, he said with a tone of finality to his voice, “I’ll be fine. It’s not like I’ll have time to worry about where I am – I’ll just buy enough food and water before I hole up in the room until my heat ends.”

While Raen was very much a big fan of being independent, even despite being an omega, he did have to admit the thought of being home and having someone there to take care of him while he was in heat trumped being holed up in a hotel room alone any day.

The doorbell rang just then and Raen was a little grateful for the interruption. Talking about sex and heats wasn’t exactly what he’d had in mind the first thing when he came here – it was awkward enough talking about such things with friends, never mind his older brother. “I’ll go get it”, he smiled and stood, “I’m starving.”

Roman couldn’t help but be relieved that Raen wasn’t jumping to use a service. Honestly, his time as a service Alpha wasn’t like prostitution. He didn’t service every omega in a certain square mile of where he was stationed. It was a service with an app much like grindr and he was only matched to omegas that chose his profile. He could open and close his availability and decline matches anytime he wanted to. That meant his service was less a job and more recreational, but Roman wasn’t about to volunteer that information.

“I understand that. I don’t think I ever made anyone feel bad. Most are just…tired of handling it alone and want…” Roman realizes where he’s going with it and remembers that it’s inappropriate. “…anyway, It’s not like I didn’t enjoy it, but you’re right. I’d imagine its better with a connection. “ Roman holds in a sigh at his own awkwardness. It was too easy to treat Raen like one of his close friends. He was aware that this was his little brother, but it was a bit hard to reconcile this adult with the little kid that he remembered.

Listening to Raen’s response regarding the hotel room, Roman frowned. “Look, I know you’re an adult…I’m not trying to be controlling, but…maybe consider staying here? I think there’s nasal sprays out there now that can block your heat scent from me…”

Roman trailed off because he could tell that Raen was getting uncomfortable. He was saved by the doorbell announcing that their food had arrived. As Raen went to get the food, Roman stood and browsed the fridge for more drinks. “Hey, I need to go to the store at some point. I have water or beer?”

Raen

Raen shook his head quickly and gave a small shrug, “No, yeah, I’m not judging anyone’s decision to get a service alpha. I can understand the desire to… not have to spend heat alone. I just personally wouldn’t enjoy it, unless I already knew the alpha and had a connection with him.” He gave an awkward little smile, resting his head on Roman’s shoulder so he wouldn’t have to look at him. And maybe Roman wouldn’t notice his embarrassment – Raen didn’t want to seem like a blushing teenager who didn’t know how to handle talking about sex.

He tilted his head to look up at Roman though, when the other seemed uncomfortable with the arrangement of him going to a hotel for his heat. “I’ve done this before, you know”, he said with a raise of an eyebrow, “I mean, it’s not a big deal. But we can talk more about it later.” He didn’t want to start arguing about it now, there was plenty of time to decide on what to do before his heat after all. Saved by the doorbell, Raen hurried to the door and greeted the person delivering their food. Having already paid for it, Raen took the bags and thanked the man before closing the door again.

“I’ll just have water”, he replied happily, stomach growling with demands for food, “God, I’m starving.” It was a little early to be having take-out and watching a movie, but Raen wasn’t really complaining. With his food on a plate and a glass of water in hand, Raen made himself comfortable on the couch again.

“This is nice”, he murmured close to Roman’s ear, smiling as he secretly indulged himself just a little in the other’s scent, “I can’t remember the last time we watched a movie together like this.” He practically burrower himself in as close to Roman’s side as he could manage and made a happy sound in the back of his throat at the taste of his food as the movie started.

Roman

Roman grabbed two waters and brought them back to the couch to sit down. He pulled his dumplings out of the bag and popped open the lid on the dumpling sauce before pressing play on the movie and slouching down on the couch. He felt Raen cuddle up to him and couldn’t help the slight flush on his cheeks. He thought he hid it rather well until he felt Raen’s breath near his ear. This was…probably innocent. Roman had done nearly the same thing just moments before.

There was a slight rush of embarrassment as he started to stiffen but Roman just closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Strong emotions like embarrassment or shame would change his scent and be more obvious than if he just accepted the pleasure and projected his contentment. Maybe it came off a little more tinged with satisfaction and a tiny bit of yearning, but still much more subtle than shame. After a short pause as he waited to be sure that his body was under control, Roman shifted and slid an arm around Raen, effectively pulling him closer to his own warmth. “…it is nice.”

Roman looked down at his dumplings and speared one with his fork (he’d never been any good with chopsticks). Just as he was about to eat it, he stopped. “…do you want one?”

Raen

Raen didn’t even think about what his gesture would look like before he saw Roman close his eyes and take a deep breath. He blinked, cheeks flushing a light color of pink as he realized how… intimate this might seem to some. “Ah, sorry”, he gave an awkward chuckle and pulled back just a little, “I didn’t mean to… “ Deciding it was probably best not to finish that sentence, Raen simply shook his head and turned back to to TV.

Roman’s scent was laced with a tint of satisfaction and contentment though, making Raen nearly want to purr. The awkwardness faded and instead he felt comfortable again. Assuming the contentment in Roman’s scent was from getting to spent time with his little brother after so much time apart made Raen smile with a little bit of pride. He’d missed Roman a lot. The arm around his shoulders pulling him closer actually had him letting out a sound that could have been mistaken for a very contented purr. “Hm? Can I?”, he perked up when Roman offered him one of the dumplings, “You can have some of my food if you want to taste.”

He took a hold of Roman’s hand and guided the fork to his lips, smiling happily. After he’d taken the dumpling from the fork, he let go of Roman’s hand and offered him a forkful of his own food. “It’s really good”, he said once the dumpling had been devoured.
